The news of a child holds such hope and promise. How much we dream and plan for this little one to join our family. Then the unthinkable happens, and the pain from our loss is so difficult and confusing. This was our baby, little life within us.

We had envisioned so much for their future; now death has taken that away. Where can we go with such overwhelming sorrow? How do we deal with the heartache that follows a miscarriage?

My first baby that I conceived resulted in an early miscarriage at 6 weeks. I know personally the excruciating pain losing an unborn baby can cause.

Know that God Cares:

May I tell you that God knows and he cares and he is present with you in your pain? This side of heaven, we will not know why our babies did not get to experience a full life on earth as we were hoping.

When we can’t explain why God would allow this to happen, we can know what God’s Word tells us – that he is good and sovereign and never leaves us. When the truth is hard to believe, he can handle our most honest and gut-wrenching prayers.

God is near:

In the book of Genesis, there is a story about a young woman named Hagar who runs away when she is mistreated by Abraham’s wife, Sarah. While Hagar is hiding out in the wilderness, God’s angel gives her a message from the Lord. It is then that Hagar says, “You are the God who sees me” [emphasis mine].

Scripture tells us over and again that God is near to the distressed, brokenhearted, and downcast person. He sees our suffering and comes close to us when we are in pain.

God sees your pain:

When we read about Jesus’ time on earth, we realize that the things we often want to avoid are the very situations for which Jesus showed up. When Mary and Martha were grieving over the death of their brother, Lazarus, Jesus entered directly into their sorrow. Even knowing what was to come next – that he would raise Lazarus from the dead – he still wept with the sisters over Lazarus’ death (John 11:32-35).

We don’t often get the Lazarus ending in our own circumstances. We lose loved ones and eagerly await a day when we will see them again. As believers, God has promised us Heaven, and he has promised us a New Earth, where he will wipe every tear from our eyes (Revelation 21:4). In the meantime, we live here on this earth in a world broken by sin. Sometimes we deal with losses that shatter our hearts and leave us in overwhelming sadness.

God will heal:

In such times, it’s necessary for us to remember that God is not the author of pain and suffering. It is not deserved or the result of anything we have done. It is merely the reality of living in this world which tore away from God’s beautiful design. So we face our pain honestly, accepting that this grief is now part of us, while knowing that God is still the author of life, redemption, and healing.

We can trust him to carry us through this season and mend our hearts with time. We can trust him to someday use this deep pain for good purposes. We can’t know exactly why God allows pain and hardship. But if he did not prevent Jesus from suffering then we can trust that our own suffering has its place.

Bible verses for Miscarriage comfort

Dear one, God always keeps His promises. One day, you will hold your child in your arms; for now, allow God to hold you in his arms while you wait for that day to come. As you do, may these verses bring you peace and comfort as you recover from this miscarriage.

  • Psalm 34:18

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

  • Psalm 56:8

You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?

  • 1 Peter 5:10

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

  • Psalm 139:13-16

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

  • Matthew 11:28-29

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

  • Romans 8:18

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

  • Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

  • Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

  • 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.

  •  Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

  •   Psalm 6:6-9

I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows weak because of all my foes. Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer.

  •   Ecclesiastes 11:5

As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.

  •   Isaiah 25:8

He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.

  •   Lamentations 3:20-23

My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

  •   1 Corinthians 15:51-55

Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil; for you are with me.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

  •   1 Peter 5:10

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

  •   Psalm 121:1-2

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

  •   Hebrews 4:14-16

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
